Best place to buy marine plywood in Ontario?

Hi all,

I need to replace the cabin floor in my 1973 Viking 28 sailboat. Does anyone know where I could get marine grade plywood for a good price? I also have a couple of stringers to replace and the originals almost look like some king of 2 inch plywood. Could I use pressure treated instead? Any suggestions welcome!

In Australia marine grade ply used to be very expensive until our nationwide Bunnings Hardware Chain started stocking it and then the price halved.

Firstly I ask why do you need "marine grade" for floors? Why not use "Exterior quality ply" or "structural ply" which uses the same glue but there may be some knots in the ply or a few small voids. Some plys are "finished grade" on one side and raw on the other side so don't spend money when you don't have to.


I have no idea of shopping in Canada but I'd compare costs at Lowes and Hanford Lumber for starters:

Thanks for the reply. The floor will get wet, and go through frost cycles multiple times a winter on the shores of Lake Ontario. I'm not sure what grade it needs to be, so I guess I'm asking what others in the region have had success with and where they purchased it. Thanks!

Boulter Plywood in Somerville Massachusetts. They have every kind of plywood you can imagine.

If you want to go traditional - they stock a high quality teak and holly plywood

Where ever you go be sure to get a plywood with at east a 1mm veneer face so you don't sand through it if you ever need to refinish.

Also Boulter sells smaller than 4x8 sheets which will reduce your shipping cost. I believe they'll also cut.

For the stringers use any good hardwood (maybe white oak) and treat it with CPES epoxy. Ask Boulter what they'd recommend. They are really nice guys and know everything about wood going into boats.

They usually have good inventory of a variety of options, give good advice on best applications for each type of marine ply they have. and within reason will cut sheets to size as needed.

Menards carries marine plywood in the states. They are mostly in the mid-west. Their prices are very good.

I'd recommend soaking the plywood in penetrating epoxy. Jamestown Distributors carries this. It soaks into the wood and seals everything much better than anything else. It doesn't add color, and you can varnish over the cured epoxy. The stabilized surface will retain a new look for much much longer and not be susceptible to moisture after treatment. Get the edges and backside of all wood and plys.
