Re: Best News ?

Thanks Bloke.
A quick search (still in proccess) has produced some interesting info on Propylene glycol .......is known to exert high levels of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) during degradation in surface waters. This process can adversely affect aquatic life by consuming oxygen aquatic organisms need to survive. Large quantities of dissolved oxygen (DO) in the water column are consumed when microbial populations decompose ethylene glycol.

Sounds like the binder itself may have some favorable qualities to slow growth.

The stuff is used everywhere...but still searching a source.

Re: Best News ?

Could it be this easy....
32 OZ POOL ANTIFREEZE CONCENTRATED - PROPYLENE GLYCOL 30054The Swimming Pool Concentrated Antifreeze (32 fluid oz.) contains 100% Propylene Glycol ...
Are we just talking about glycol/antifreeze?

I will also be hauling out in a few weeks so further information would be most interesting.

Re: Best News ?

@ James

I think it is just that easy...I have also been doing some quick research, and it seems that PropyleneGlycol is commonly used as a solvent in chemicals, both food & non food. Very interesting about the dissolved oxygen. It actually consumes the oxygen at the surface layer, apparently starving the micro organsims of their oxygen supply.

Antifreeze is only one of its uses. I do not profess to be a Chemical Eng, however from what I can gather, if you have 100% pure Polpylene Glycol, you are good to go.

More info here Propylene Glycol : Propylene glycol properties

If this is as simple as it seems, the AF manufacturers will find some way of getting this stuff banned, or at least listed as a Restricted Product...
