Beneteau 47.7 Steering cable Replacement

Has anybody replaced the Dyneema steering cable and bearings in the wheel shaft on a Beneteau 47.7.

It is a single line from the quadrant through a turning block up to the binnacle and around the steering wheel shaft about 10 times then back down to the opposite turning block and thence to the quadrant. The rope however seems to be clamped by some mysterious system in the middle of these turns obviously so it will not slip.

There seems no logical way to be able to release the Dyneema from the shaft to be able to extract it to enable the bearings to be replaced.

I am sure there must be a logical method however it is not obvious to me at this point.

Amaranth

I wonder whether that is covered in the Owner's Manual? (Someone has uploaded all 40 pages of it)

Re: Beneteau 47.7 Steering cable Replacement

The fitting in on the line is a nircopress sleeve pinched in a vice. If you make up the new ones with an open splice you can install them with a cow hitch onto the eye-bolts in the quadrant. When the riggers made up mine they dipped the line in a liquid that helped the line seat when first installed. The treatment made the line blue and feel waxy I'm not sure what it was.

I have a spare set in a bag tucked under the mount for the autopilot ram.

The post is old so I'm guessing you are sorted

Re: Beneteau 47.7 Steering cable Replacement

Hi all,

I own a First 47.7 as well and would like to fit a new steering cable. Does anyone have the specs (thickness, length, material) for this cable? Any help is highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Robert
