Assessment of a Albin Vega mast base.

Hi guys,

I am a newbie trying to decide on the purchase of my first boat.

My plan is to find an affordable small cruiser to serve me as a school and practice for couple of years until I am ready for a bigger commitment which hopefully will stand a long ocean passage.

I did a lot of research prior my first viewing on an albin vega to understand major potential areas of concern for this boat. But since I just have the theory and no much practice, I would like to ask your opinion about its mast which pictures I send below.

The mast base seems to be in bad condition but not sure to what extend. Due to the age of the boat (1973) is visible that the deck part where the mast sits seems no longer to be straight and there are many cracks on the fiber glass around it.

All opinions are welcome, either on the looks of the damage and potential costs for fixing it.

That is about typical saging for an albin vega. Normally they stop at this point .you can in step the mast and cut out the area and build it up with glass laminate for not much money. Mine looks about like yours and has for years..and I sail the boat lot. Better indication is down below at the mast beam check for a bow down there. But generally it settles in and does no further sagging past a certain point. Mast beam problems on Vegas are not generally a big deal
