Any ideas what this is for???

I bought a boat over the summer and am working through the refit. She's an Antigua (CSY) 44 with a lot of custom stainless work. The person I purchased her from had her for a year and had taken a lot of things apart and I could never figure out what this was for. It is solid (heavy) and today I decided to see if it fit on the bowsprit, which it kinda looks like it does. I'm not saying it belongs there, but???

The only other place on the boat it would fit would be along side for a boarding ladder?

Maybe for the boarding ladder when bow in to a slip?

I believe it will be use for the snubber with a elastic cable for light wind anchorage.

I bet those carabiners have something to do with it. Don't get rid of it. I bet it'll become clear in time and you'll be glad you have it. I ditched some things on my boat and now I wish I hadn't! Is there a paserelle stowed somewhere hidden in the boat?

Offset passerelle bowmount For sure - maybe just for a gangplank (which is cheap & can double up as a fender board when needed. Stow along guardrails back by the pushpit, maybe? (Yes, I have got one,,,)

Re: Any ideas what this is for???

Just make very certain it is well secured - especially at the boat end of that pole. You would not want that to come unscrewed when you were walking the plank.
Suggest it should also be easily removed when at sea to avoid any possible fouling of sheets.

Re: Any ideas what this is for???

I have no idea what it’s for so won’t speculate.
But... do change the D shackle attaching your anchor to the chain for a bow (aka harp) shackle and screw the pin through the chain and then mouse it with stainless or Monel wire. When you think about it the reason why is obvious

Re: Any ideas what this is for???

Could the outer ends be attachment points for the tack of an asymmetrical? Perhaps a way to get it ahead of the forestay and outside of the pulpit? Attach tack to port or starboard end depending on wind direction? Just a guess!

Thanks! I am only now making it to the bow to go through the existing set up and change up as needed!

All great replies, Thanks!
