algae just below water line...

Hello Everyone,
We are getting ready for another season. just below the water line along the entire length of the boat we have some light algae. It is very light. I was wondering if it is okay just to put a new coat of abalative paint over it or should i sand it off before i paint it again?

It absolutely has to be removed. Anit-fouling paint will not stick to it for very long after the algae dies and starts decaying. Instead of sanding, use a coarse 3M Scotch-Brite pad, some water and some elbow grease. Tape off your boot stripe so you do not scratch it.
