55gal boat tank re-install -

Hi all - been reading some threads regarding the reinstall of our boat tank which I had to remove in order to find out just what the heck has been causing intermittent stalling past 6 months!

Well a 5" long piece of rubber seal that broke off from somewhere came out!

Anyway - I have put in the por15 fuel liner and its busy drying. I noticed some pitting on the outside where the foam had trapped water in and im reluctant to do the same. Needless to say the tank still looks real good, nothing more than light flakes on some small areas which I sanded down and painted over with the por15.

Im thinking of using that plastic shower flooring with holes u step out onto (they actually hurt my feet), but I think they will act as an excellent support underneath the tank -

And then use ribs down the sides and fore/aft to keep it centered and call it a day -

thoughts on this approach?

Also considering putting a filter in the main filler neck (easily accessible once tank is built in) - what could I use, was thinking some S/S mesh or something.?

Something like this:

Mesh Strainer

there isn't enough money on the planet for me to put that tank back in the hole....it's aluminium and already corroding!! the shape is pretty standard, I'd find a poly replacement and be done with it!!

sorry but if I had $400 to throw at it i would def do that, unfortunately I dont.. Gotta use what I have right now. Like I said the tank is surprisingly good still. Not a single drop leaked before.. Im sure the por15 will extend its life significantly..

have to agree... no way would I put a tank like that back into my boat. But- your boat, your choice.
However- you do have to be careful of 'poultice corrosion' as well when you cover up existing corrosion. If you don't get it all with the sanding, it will continue to corrode unseen until the leaks start. Really should be sandblasted to get at all the corrosion in the tiny pits.

You better get rid of this piece of junk before it causes fires or whatever else comes with leaking diesel. Spend the money and put plastic in there. I would not use this junk but for a flower pot.

I agree! Too much work to reuse that. Buy a pre made one close to the shape or plastic.

Remember that old saying (and I won't use quotation marks as I don't know it exactly):

If you can't afford to do it right the first time what makes you think you can afford to do it a second time?
