ZF gearbox question

I had my boat repowered by a well respected boat yard in September. Now four months later I’ve been sitting at a dock unable to move. My new ZF25M will no longer go into forward. Has anyone else had similar problems with their ZF gearbox? To make matters worse, although ZF says they will replace the gearbox they say they’ll only pay for four hours of mechanic’s time (not nearly enough) and won’t pay for my dockage fees.

Without knowing your specific installation, the gear box weighs 19KG mate, 4 hours for a good mechanic is plenty of time.

Organize a time with mechanic, get them on and change it out and problem solved. 4 hours you have prob even got time for a seatrial...

Will it go in reverse?? Is it possible this is a simple shift cable or linkage issue??

If only the world were so simple. I checked that and so did the mechanic. According the the deler the gearbox needs to be replaced.

This is not my time estimate, it’s the dealer’s estimate. I have a sailboat and there is not enough room between the gearbox and where the shaft enters the boat. The engine needs to be moved about six inches forward to remove the gearbox, which involves unbolting the engine and disconnecting a lot of hoses.

Fair enough, whats the mechanic say about the time frame? TBH someone that has never moved a engine before it can be daunting, but you would be surprised how quick it can happen. just my 2 cents (as a diesel fitter )

Is it running on oil or trans-fluid? Is whatever is in there correct?

In answer to your question, This would be very unusual. This gearbox has been made for many years and is highly reliable. Well cared for they usually outlast the engine.

How many hours on it before it failed? Was it ever in forward while you were sailing?
