Yanmar gm10 key

Hi,

Please forgive my newbie question. This is my first sailboat.

The ignition key switch on my yanmar is broken, when I put in the key the cylinder falls into the back of the ignition panel. What is the function of this key is it like a car where u put in the key and turn it like a car?

Re: Yanmar gm10 key

You turn it to activate the start button and the gauges and to let the alternator charge the battery. On that motor, the manual says that if you turn off the key while the engine is running your alternator will not charge the battery.

Is the switch broken or just not fixed to the panel?
You can replace it with any marine keyswitch. Just re connect the wires the same way.

Why can't things remain where i carelessly left them?

There should be a nut that holds the guts against the face of the panel. Maybe avble to pick up a cheapie switch with plastic nut at the auto parts store and swap out the nut only. They seem pretty standard.
