Yanmar Diesel

Hi!

After my fathers passing I inherited a Yanmar Diesel. There is no tag on the engine but there are some stamps. I’ve tried with zero success to determine the model and specs of the engine based on the information I’ve found.

Stamps: “2S” “7Y29P” “81227”

Anyone out there able to lend a hand?

Thank you in advance!

Re: Yanmar Diesel

That's a Yanmar 2S engine. They were often used in life boats.

Further to this, I believe the 2S shares the same block and many other components as the 2QM engines (used in work / recreational boats) and the 2TR engines (used in the Yanmar YM series tractors).

Essentially they are variants of the same engine but have different injector pumps, cooling pumps etc,

Re: Yanmar Diesel

The “2S” seems to be just a factory casting number, I have the same marking on a 2GM and a 3T70B engine blocks. I have never seen a 2S lifeboat engine but the pic in the earlier post is dissimilar in many ways to the OPs photos. I really just looks like a regular ol 2QMClick image for larger version

ID:	207874 with what appears to be a hurth gear box. It looks like lovely little engine, hope you have a boat for it to share.

Interesting.

I don't know what constitutes a regular 2QM but the OP's engine has some differences to my 2QM20. I also don't the subtle differences between a 2QM and a 2QM20.

I can note the following differences between his engine and my 2QM20 that maybe helpful to the OP.

The location of the injector pump. On my 2QM20 it is on the block below the exhaust manifold and towards the gearbox end of the lift pump where the OP's engine has a cover fitted.

The OP's engine has a belt driven water pump">raw water pump while my 2QM20 has direct driven raw water pump on the end of the camshaft (located pretty much behind what is the injector pump on the OP's engine).

On the OP's engine there is one oil fill cap in the centre of the valve cover whereas my 2QM20 has two oil fill caps on the valve cover, one each roughly above the exhaust valves.

It certainly seems to some variant of the 2QM / 2TR engines.

Here’s the model with the injector pump on the timing cover. It really does look like a 2GM though, not a 2QM.Click image for larger version

I hadn't considered it might be a 2QM15 which is somewhat different beast to the 2QM20. For starters it is 75Kg lighter!

Here is a drawing straight from the 2QM15 service manual and it looks very much like the OP's engine.

Re: Yanmar Diesel

Also I thought the crankcase breather came off the valve cover on the 2GM (like the 2GM20 does) and the OP's engine does not have this style breather.

But I might be mistaken!

Re: Yanmar Diesel

The Yanmar 2qm15 normally has its engine label just under the lift pump.
Lucky CaptainMayhem if he has a good one of those. Owners I've sold parts to love them.
We want one for ourselves but they get snatched up pretty fast when they come on the market.
