yanmar 4jh4e injector pump removal

A few months back I had to remove the injector pump from a yanmar 4jh4e. I was not happy when I looked at what was required, a lot of work to remove the the front timing cover.

Upon closer inspection and some thought it became obvious that all that work was not needed. The manufacture of a Puller to hold the injector drive gear in place while removing the injector pump was all that was required.

The puller bolts into the 4 holes that the cover plate bolts use, two bolts into the gear itself and one big fellow in the center to pop the shaft. Be sure to rotate the gear so that the key is on top before you begin. Easy as that.

A couple of hours later the puller made, put in place, an hour after that and the pump was on it's way for a full service. A week later.....and a nice wad of cash gone.....the pump was back in place and the motor purring like a kitten
.
This may be common knowledge, I am not sure. I just thought I would let folks know it's easy done if they need to do it.

Later, Ralph

PS; I do still have the puller, and no use for it, so I suppose I would part with it.

Yup, great motor. It's in a 42 Tayana, she moves along happily 6 to 7 knots.
A lot depends on prop and how hard you like to run your engine. I don't like running her hard.
Anyone in a hurry in a sailboat is in the wrong boat.

Hi,

Just out of curiosity, how many hours did you have on the engine when you had to replace the pump?

I usually motor around 2500 on my Jeanneau 45 at around 8 knots.

Hi, I have a 4JH4E with about 2200hrs and will service the injectors this year. I was wondering how many hrs you had on yours when you serviced the injector pump.
Thanks

Re: yanmar 4jh4e injector pump removal

The engine is basically new, 850 hrs. Long story short it was a contamination issue.
I will get some pics up and dimensions as well in the next day or so.

Hey Art, would you be willing to make a contribution to keep the " Guiness in the fridge fund" ?

Oh, can someone tell me how to PM? It's not obvious to me (like a great many things.

Sounds more like $50 deposit & $30 refunded when returned?
There is a mob on Australia that do that with harmonic removers for just about every vehicle known to man.
I reckon it's a good arrangement?

Re: yanmar 4jh4e injector pump removal

I did that recently, just jammed several clean rags into the space between the gear and the gear cover all around from about 12'oclock to 5. The index marks lined up first obviously. The pump came out and the gear stayed in mesh.
