Either way , i am going to see if i can get anothrr jubilee clip on to that hose which appears to have been leeking. I am aware of the problem of putting a jubilee clip where it might be near the edge of the pipe so might just end up tightening the existing.

Many tks for all suggestions.

99% sure it won't be Al. Al doesn't play nicely with warm sea water and hot diesel exhaust gasses.

Check the hose for inflexibility, it may have gone hard and need replacing.

Skipperpete will be right. That elbow is ss. I was suspicious as I've never seen a 2000 hr old cast iron elbow looking like that.
Yes the tiny landing barely one hose clip wide is a PITA too.
On our boat where the exhaust hose joins the PVC we have to put silicone on the joint to retain & seal it.
If you have trouble with it leaking try that. Leave it for 24hrs before startup if using silicone. It is harder to get off of course, can make you shed tears of rage & frustration in a confined area. Have to work it off with a screwdriver.

Aluminum is not a great choice of metal for a wet exhaust mixer but Beta supplied their engines with cast aluminum alloy mixers until recently . Stainless steel tube elbows last a bit longer , stainless steel pipe even longer and bronze?.. never craps out, ever. Solč, Vetus and even Yanmar supplied their earlier marinisations with bronze mixers but went to more sacrificial metals. The idea that an elbow should only survive for the period of 5 oil changes is appalling Click image for larger version

$302. Good quality stuff.

We have a 4JH4-TE, 2,600 hours, I get brown water after a layup. Never thought much about it. You have salt water with exhaust gasses mixed into it, along with whatever exhaust crap was stuck in the line, soaking and perhaps growing some exotic marine critters and alge. Yup, looks like ****, for about 30 seconds.

Appalling is right.
Guess HDI marine & exhaust elbow.com will be doing some Beta mixing elbows too.
The one you pictured would be easy to make up.

Excellent, thanks for the link hpeer...... they even put a ridge on the raw water injection pipe, why couldn’t yanmar manage to do that on the original!!!!!
