Yanmar 2QM15 Fuel Filter

A local sailor has stripped out the bleed screw on the top of his on engine fuel filter. The entire filter Y124790-55601 is available but a number of owners report the same problem of thread stripping. Helicoil has been suggested. Is there another filter which would work ?
Yanmar seems to have changed the return line location. On some, like this engine, it goes back to the filter on others, back to the tank. This would require some way of feeding the line into the tank...would it be ok to tee it into the line going into the Racor primary filter which is not on the engine?

Yes, it would be ok to tee it into the line going into the Racor primary filter.

There is very little fuel in the return line on a 2QM15 unlike some Yanmar engines which also have a return line from the injection pump. In such engines, the return line more often goes back to the tank.

Yanmar also replaced the copper sealing washer with a synthetic sealing washer under the bleed screw in order to reduce the torque required on the bleed screw to ensure a seal. Using the synthetic washer reduces the chances of stripping the thread.

However it sounds like the manatee has bolted in this instance.

There are multiple remote mounted fuel filters that work.
I got rid of the dinky yanmar mounted one with its tiny & hugely expensive, if it has a Yanmar label, filter cartridge & replaced it with a mount that takes a 5 micron baldwin filter cartridge for less than 1/2 the cost & 5x the lifespan

All you have to do is find one that you can fit a 10micron or under fuel filter to.

He can just drill & tap the hole bigger as well if he wants to use Yammer one temporarily.

You engine doesn't care how you got the bigger-than-five-micron crud out of your fuel, as long as you did. Assuming the fuel lift pump can do its job, you are free to install your own filter, with the added advantage of getting to put it somewhere that you can reach with both hands. What a concept!

That sounds like a better filter cartridge.tkeitlu & it saves searching a filter catalogue.
