Yamnar engine lifespan

I am interesting in a 2013 Lagoon equipped with Yamnar engines (3JH5E). They are listed as having 6000hrs. Assuming maintenance was routinely performed , should I be concerned about those hrs?

What is the lifespan of those engines before they need overhaul?

Appreciate your thoughts.
Thank you

Re: Yamnar engine lifespan

Overhaul usually by 8000 hours. Read an article on the web that Mack Boring said they had a serviceable life of 20,000 hours although that clearly depends on usage and service. 6000 hours on a boat that age is high usage...probably a charter boat. Be sure to get an oil analysis. The manual should give more accurate numbers that what I recall from various articles.

Re: Yamnar engine lifespan

Colvin, you should note that this number is likely made referring to continuous use on something like a commercial fishing boat. For example, there are "million mile" trucks, but the average pickup is lucky to hit 2 or 3 hundred thousand miles with good care. I had always heard the number 10,000 for the boat engine. Again, all depends on usage and care.

Re: Yamnar engine lifespan

we have a pair of 4JH2TE's, with about 7300hrs which are still going strong

believe it all comes down to care and proper maintenance. we (full time live-aboards) use the engines regularly and make sure they are always run hard enough to get good and hot. oil & filters every 150hrs without fail

there was a post here on CF recently by a chap who pulled down a high hours 4JH2 and measured all wear points, which were (i recall) about half towards yanmar tolerance. cannot now find the thread but attached is his (very comprehensive) yanmar teardown report 8000hr Compressed.pdfreport

worth reading...

cheers,
