pirate Yamaha 8hp outboard issue

Hello everyone.
I have a 2010 8hP OB. Never had any issues with it ever. I did a long sail from Australia through SEA and since then haven't used it for the last 6 months, until now.

Fresh fuel...3 pulls no problems...well so it seemed. I let it warm up for a while before going for a spin. It kept stalling under load. Cleaned in-line fuel filter and checked plugs/spark etc - all good. But it keeps stalling under load. I discovered that it will run ok(ish) with the choke out about halfway.

I didn't drain the fuel after a really long and hard sail. Bad move...also there's no help here at all. Really need it to be reliable as before! Would appreciate some advice.

Lloyd.

Sounds like it's running lean when you open the throttle. If it has an accelerator pump, it would be worth checking it's circuit is clean. Also the main jet may be partly blocked.

A partial disassembly and spray with some carb cleaner could help.

Sounds like a dirty carb. Fix is simple, take it apart and clean it.

Love to help but what we did was done during a fifteen minute phone call between Australia and Cambodia.
If you really need it I could send a lengthy instructional email.
If required pm me with an email address. Or alternatively you could call my mobile number 24x7 for a chat.
I'm sending you a pm now with my number. Feel free to call.
P.S. It will help if you have reasonable practical skills.

I have one of these engines as well and have had a problem like what your describe. Could be something else, but make sure there is good cooling water flow. With lite water flow, engine will shut itself down from over heating under load, but will start and run ok at minimal load.

Re: Yamaha 8hp outboard issue

Your symptoms sound precisely like a dirty carb.

I have the same engine (2 cycle) and it really does not like sitting unused or ethanol in the gas. Adding Stabil helps a lot but here in the states the best cure is ethanol free gas which is available in certain places. If you're not going to use it for awhile it makes sense to go through the fuel-related "winterization" procedure which is pretty straightforward.

Cleaning the carb is dead simple and takes about 30 minutes. If you don't have a rebuild kit be very careful with the gasket as you'll need to reuse it.

We have the same motor and the problem we have is the pee tube keeps blocking up. I have paper clip close by to keep clearing it. Bought used, I think the po must have picked up sand or something. Lucky it hasn't over heated. Ted.

All elephants are grey, however not all things grey are elephants.

The stream is just a 'tell' to let you know that cooling water is flowing. You are correct in that if there is no cooking water flowing, there will be no water streaming out. However, just because there is no water streaming out, does not necessarily mean that there is no cooling water flowing.

In your case, the clogged discharge tube is merely a clogged discharge tube. If a paperclip clears the problem then the problem was only in the notification device and imporoperly warning of a problem which does actually exist.

I agree, the behavior sounds like a partially clogged jet and/or a carb that simply needs a rebuild.

Re: Yamaha 8hp outboard issue

Yep. old story. Partially blocked main jet. It doesn't take much, and it may be something like a little piece of lint, or similar, but if you clean it out really well, you'll be back in business.
Oh, on the last one I worked on, I added an in line, automotive type, paper element fuel filter and it hasn't failed since. I couldn't fit the filter underneath the engine cover, so it's a bit "Heath Robinson" but it works.

Having just read this thread I deduced the same. BrianLara is being rather coy over what cannot be that hard to describe - can it. 15 minutes? you could just about strip and the carb on. yam 8in that time. It's not that difficult to describe and write.
