Yamaha 2hp Outboard Woes

My 2hp 2-stroke Yamaha has started acting up. It fires on the first pull, but then dies and takes a lot of effort to start again. It also lacks power, and will die out after running wot for a minute or two.

I took out the tank and emptied it, removed the filter and blew it out, put fresh petrol in, no change. I sped up the idle which helped a bit with starting, but still not happy. The spark plug has only done about 2 hours.

Any suggestions?

Take the carb off and clean it.

Re: Yamaha 2hp outboard woes

My 2CMH Yamaha did exactly the same thing. All other checks were done. I replaced the magneto coil inside the flywheel, started with a 1/2 pull.
Threw out the package with the part #, sorry.
This apparently is an interchangable Tohatsu/Nissan part.

Blowing on the filter won't do it. Wash it with dish detergent and dry good. New gas leaves a clear film on it. I did away with mine and installed an in line filter that I could get to.

Looks like it might be a blocked tank vent, as I tried loosening the tank cap a few times and all seemed well. I'll give it a little while before I claim absolute victory, but so far so good. Thanks for all the responses.

Don't use the alcohol added fuel !! use non alcohol gasoline only in a 2 stroke!! it will cause all of the problems you are having !! Down here in Louisiana we still have more 2 strokes then 4 strokes and watch for the non alcohol gas stations at all times cus we learned the hard way ya just can't use this new gas in our motors!! just my 2 cents

Use no ethanol unless you run your carb dry each time you start and run it.

The government's ethanol is a small engine killer. They don't care and there is no warning label.

kind regards,

I don't use that ethanol crap in either my cars or my outboard. I love my O-rings, floats and gaskets, so I only feed them nice refined fossil hydrocarbons.
