winterizing yanmar 1gm10 cooling system

I'm told I should first open the drain plugs in the block and manifold. The Yanmar 1GM10 is the greatest engine in the world with the worst owner's manual! Anybody know where these plujgs are located - best, where do I get an engine drawing that shows their locations. thanks in advance

tess,

Don't know where you are but up here in the Great White North we usually put the raw water intake hose in a bucket of 50/50 anti freeze, start the engine, and pump the stuff through till it comes out the exhaust. Make sure you put a bucket under the exhaust to catch the stuff that comes out and properly dispose of it. If the engine is raw water cooled, take the thermostat out first. Some people like to take the impeller out after running the anti freeze through, others leave it in. No need to drain anything. You should loosen the alternator belt for the winter.

Right. This is what I've been doing but thought I'd change to potable antifreeze instead of ethylene glycol. The problem is that the potable stuff can get too diluted if it mixes with any water left in the passages. The local boatyard (who are required to use the potable antifreeze) drain the block and ma nifold to make certain this doesn't happen.

My 2GM20s with ethylene glycol antifreeze cooling loops and heat exchangers have ball valve pigots on the side for draining out the cooling antifreeze. We replace with new antifreeze, then run propylene glycol through the heat exchanger to exhaust as mentioned above.

The propylene glycol sold by Canadian Tire is for minus 50, and sells for 8-9 dollars for 4 litres. You can both afford to waste some, and afford some dilution with the price and strength.

You should go to Yanmarhelp.com with your question, and for other good info.

I'm using the Seloc manual for the 2gmf and it includes the 1gm. It will really fill in the gaps from the factory manual.
