Whine in Borg Warner

My brother has a 30ft Alura with a Borg Warner 72C, Serial # 1017012, 2.5 to 1 reduction. Motor is Pleasure Craft 350ci Chevy block.
Box has squeal across whole rev range when in gear. Local mechanic can't tell him what is wrong.
He has tried both ATF and W40 single grade.
Can some one who has pulled a Borg Warner apart tell me what you think. Thanks.

Re: Whine in Borg Warner

That's the sound mine made right before i had to replace it. My raw water cooler had sprung a leek and let salt water in.

Re: Whine in Borg Warner

I have had them apart and they are very simple inside.
Oil pump, some bushings and bearings and control valve and clutch packs.

Does the squeal sound like a bearing whining or a slipping belt?
And the sound occurs only in gear?
Perhaps the oil pump is whining.
Perhaps the clutches are slipping.
Perhaps a bearing is worn out.
This is the kind of thing that likely has to be taken apart to see what is going on.

How is the cutlass bearing on the prop shaft?

Its not anything outside of the box. I think its time for surgery.

***If no noise when engine running and shift lever in nuetral, it is probably the output shaft bearing. If there has been water intrusion and not cleared immediately or while setting and not being used, the bearings may rust.
I have been rebuilding BW Velvet Drives for about 40 years and have a
1-1, 1.5-1 and a 1-2.91 in stock.
Go to www.marinegears.com and check out diagrams, parts, etc.
I can help talk you through a rebuild e mail oldflathead@bshmarine.com
