Where to look for a discontinued Westerbeke part?

Seems like the fuel injection pump on my Westerbeke 63C is giving up the ghost (engine takes a long time to start, fuel does not appear to have much pressure on cranking). However, per Westerbeke catalog that part is no longer available (043183). What are my options for finding an alternative? I believe Westerbeke is a re-packaged Yanmar but have no idea how to find their catalog. If they don't have it, is a pump rebuildable?

You could take the pump to a diesel repair place. There are a dozen in every major town. There are actually only a relative handful of (mechanical) diesel injection pump designs, and there should be a tag on yours that they can look up that will tell them how to set either a new or rebuilt pump to match what yours is supposed to do.

Do the easy stuff first, test the glowplugs and the wiring, this engine needs a 5-15 second preheat depending on the local temperature.
Westerbeke is remarkably secretive about the injection pump on this engine and describe it variously as a Zexel, a VE, a Diesel Kiki and a Bosch and I suspect it’s a Bosch VE. Does anyone on the forum know what the base engine that Westerbeke marinised to make the 63C actually is?... Perkins? Mazda? Mitsubishi??, it’s definitely not a Yanmar

Re: Where to look for a discontinued Westerbeke part?

I recently had to replace the starter on my Westerbeke 63C-based generator, and the replacement was a Mitsubishi part number. I don't know if that definitively means that it's a Mitsubishi engine, but it's a clue.

As for the high pressure fuel pump, I had that 'rebuilt' several years ago at one of those local diesel repair places when the engine would 'run away' after 10 minutes. The rebuild solved the problem, but I don't know if they found a replacement or actually rebuilt the one I gave them.

Good luck with yours.

Greg.

Injection pumps are never replaced, they are rebuilt. Take the pump and the injectors to the local diesel shop and let them have at it.

Just be sure you are going to the source, the ACTUAL place that will do the work.

I had a similar problem. It turned out that the start relay was not energizing the electric fuel pump on my Westerbeke 82 B4. If you have an electric one on your's you might want to see if it's running.
