Where to get seawater pump repaired in Oz?

Just having motorsailed to Newcastle in NSW Australia (on a weekend when everything is closed ), I found considerable amount of water in the bilge, which on inspection came from a dripping waterpump (under the drive spindle area). An unexpected surprise as the engine, a 42hp Vetus has done only 320 hours.
Before removing the pump for repair I decided to search the Internet for companies servicing/repairing marine engine pumps in the local area. No luck with that.
Similarly had no luck with identifying the pump through Vetus or vetus agent's sites, though found STM 7699 stamped on the front. Have attached a picture of pump.
Wandering if Johnson or Jabsco had suitable service kits.
Any thoughts on repairs or local contacts would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance Peter.

It appears to be a Johnson fb4-9, with a service kit 09-45585.

That leak is not going to sink the boat.

It's a Johnson pump... the number you posted is the Vetus part number for the standard Johnson pump

Can't help you with supplies in OZ, but maybe that link will get you moving in the right direction.

Replacing the seals is not difficult. MaineSail has a tutorial that covers the job well, and the seals are available at any bearing and seal vendor, and for very little money!

Peter,

If you are at the Newcastle Marina, they have a free town map in the office that you can use to orient yourself, then, armed with the parts numbers, and the parts, start investigating, it is an industrially oriented town, and you should be able to find whatever you need. We have found them friendly.

Bearing and seals will available at either CBC bearing or Statewide Bearings. Both have outlets in Newcastle AFAIK.

Having the old ones with you when you go will ensure you will get the right parts.

The seals will be a couple of bucks and the bearings maybe 10 dollars or so (each).

Re: Where to get seawater pump repaired in Oz?

I have the same engine. Leave it to the Europeans to take a fine little Japanese engine (Mitsubishi) and do stupid things with their marine conversion. Yes, that little "O" ring on the power takeoff shaft assembly the Dutch fabricated to run the raw water pump and the fuel pump will fail and probably put water, not only in your bilge, but through the power takeoff into the crank case as well. Given time it will ruin the fuel pump too.

Take the whole contraption off and throw it away. Get a belt driven Jabsco pump, have a machine shop fabricate (or DIY if you have the skills), 1. A second crankshaft mounted pulley to be bolted in front of the existing one (You will have to drill and tap the existing pulley.). 2. Fabricate an L shaped flange to support the Jabsco pump. 3. Fabricate a square plate and gasket to cover the no longer needed power takeoff access opening. If you design the mounting flange right you can just attach it to the engine block with four machine screws just behind the belts. I cut slots of in the flange to adjust the belt tension.

Oh, the fuel pump. Throw that away too. I installed two Volkswagen electric fuel pumps, (used to be cheap $15 now more like $50 and they make them for "diesel" now as well but I never had trouble with my gas ones.). One pump was mounted near the bottom of the fuel tank and one just before the filter/separator housing. They are wired to a couple of relays we installed so that the pumps start when the key is turned on and stop when the engine is shut down. They have been working for 18 years, replaced one of the pumps during that time. I carry a spare pump and can easily swap out a failed if need be. This arrangement provides good redundancy since the engine will run fine with either fuel pump. Good luck.

Re: Where to get seawater pump repaired in Oz?

Thanks for the helpful replies. I have now ID'd the pump as a Johnson. Looked at the repair tutorial which seemed simple enough with a workshop at your disposal, but impractical to do in the cockpit. Will follow up with a visit to the specialist.
Thanks again Peter

Lots of us have rebuilt pumps in the cockpit with a hammer and a 2x4. It’s doable.

+1, and probably much quicker than getting it done by others.

I also endorse Minards, if you don't wish to do it yourself!
