What's the difference between Yanmar 2GM and 2GML?

Our new to us 1990 Compass 47 has a Yanmar 2GML genset. I have the original owners manual for it and it is definitely 2GML. I haven't run across a 2GML anywhere when looking up spare parts etc. It is raw water cooled just like the 2GM and has the same water pump set up.

Just a guess but its probably the governor designation.... constant speed rather than the variable speed used on the 2GM propulsion engines. The wiring might be different to accommodate the auto shutdown that’s usual only to generators. Mackboring has a brochure that gives the details as only a generator engine.

Also just a guess, but when I think L in abbreviations it's likely either "long" (as in the case of outboards) or "low" (as in the case of either gearing OR optimal designed RPM). If as per skipperpete's comment it is for a generator then it would make sense to have various engine details like the wiring optimized for lower RPM which could give extended service life...



(disclaimer: all above is thinking out loud in the interests of problem solving, as opposed to solid knowledge on the specific details separating those two engines...)

Some gen model designations indicate modifications to the standard unit .... typically electrically isolated , 2 pole dc electrical system
