What is this Fitting on CAV Injector Pump (Ford Lehman)

Can anyone identify the circular disc (arrowed) on the CAV Minimec injection pump fitted on a Ford Lehman 2722E engine?

It is fitted to the top block on the pump just below the injector pipes. The side facing away from the camera has a small central hole in it and it appears to be some sort of ambient air pressure unit or expansion or damping device.

The problem is that it is leaking diesel from around the pressed flange near the pointy end of the arrow.

Is it just something that unscrews and a new item fitted?

Thanks Emmalina.
Supplemental question - is it essential? Can it be removed and blanked off, temporarily.

It looks like it might take a couple weeks to source a new one. A bit of googling led me to this site https://injector-rehab.com/knowledge...sation-damper/

It suggests it isn't essential but desirable. So I am thinking I might be able to block off the port until a replacement unit arrives, meanwhile keep engine use to a minimum.

Thoughts???

As Emmalina says, the device is a pulse damper, fitted to the main fuel chamber in the injection pump and used to smooth out pressure pulses from the lift pump, and from the opening and closing of fill ports. This helps ensure smooth, uniform feed from the main injection pump fuel gallery into the individual plunger chambers. Helps maintain even power, less surging, etc.

Back in the bad old days before common rail, electronic unit injectors, etc. most of the Bosch inline pumps on larger engines used them....and they were occasionally subject to cracking of the steel diaphragm.

Try “www.injectionpumps.co.uk”.

As already mentioned, it is a pulsation damper, and also a bleeder.

Per Brian at American Diesel, Yes, it can be removed and capped temporarily (if you have the correct special fitting... we were lucky enough to have one in spares. )

Brian has these manufactured to modern specs and keeps them in stock. It is a once every 20-30 year replacement item.

Best wishes sorting it out.

Cheers! Bill

Here's a link to Bomac Marine. They are Lehman specialists and can provide information and parts for most engines:
http://www.bomacmarine.com/index.html
I've used them for our 40-year old 80 hp Lehman. I believe, CEO, Greg Lilienthal's father was one of the original engineers who designed and built Lehman engines.

Thanks Bill, I am interpreting 'correct special fitting' to mean a plug with the correct thread and sealing.

As the existing damper is unusable, I might as well remove it and try cutting the diaphragm end of the hex fitting and seeing how hard it is plug off or weld over or....

Meanwhile I'll hunt down a replacement item.
