Likely the top nut comes off the bar and then the upper bracket removed from the attachment points in the block and the belts slipped over the bar then the pulleys. It is recommended to replace dual belts in pairs.

If it is a V belt pulley the belts are indeed inside out. Maybe PO could not find the right size.
Wrong on both counts.

Re: What Is This Bracket On My Freshwater Pump Pully?

Based on the Nyloc nuts top and bottom I think the upper bracket is not threaded, the rod passes through. To change belts loosen the lower Nyloc and run it down the rod. If you're lucky you can use the upper Nyloc as a "bolt head" to spin the rod out of the bearing housing. If the upper Nyloc wants to break away then spin the lower one all the way down until it meets the jam nut at the bottom, jam the two nuts together, and then use the lower jam nut to twist the rod out of the bearing housing.

When it's all done, if you're lucky (again) you only moved the lower Nyloc so you should be able to put it all back in the exact same place by turning things back in until the upper Nyloc and the jam nut meet their respective homes.

Re: What Is This Bracket On My Freshwater Pump Pully?

Thanks for all the replies. There is a bolt that connects the part at the top of the threads to the frame on the engine. I took the bolt out once, but it the two parts were froze so needed a little bit harder tap to break free. The PPO (2 owners ago) did everything the strong way, he wanted to cruise (still not sure if he ever did)

There is a pretty big alternator mounted, Old Balmer 90100

I think the belt issue of being inside out was covered, (they are not)

I’ll post a pic when i change the belts today.

Re: What Is This Bracket On My Freshwater Pump Pully?

I’m curious to know what sort of engine that twin belt alternator is fitted to, it looks vaguely like a 3GM F yanmar.
A lot of marine engines have arrangements on the front pulley ( direct drive hydraulic pumps and large jabsco’s) that make it a full day’s work to change the innermost belts so it’s fairly common practice to zip tie a spare set to the engine behind the existing set.
Pete.

Belt tensioner stabilizer. Maybe I missed it but what engine is it? Horse power, all items the belts drive. It looks to me like a very well engineered set up.

Re: What Is This Bracket On My Freshwater Pump Pully?

For those asking yup, 3gm30F

Welp as I said it’s actually pretty easy to get the bracket off to access belts. But my belts were too small. Apparently this setup needs about a half inch bigger belt. The OEM belt doesn’t fit and nether did the two others I bought years back. I’ll have to see if I can find some in Malé.

The current belts are Dayco 15375 top cog, Effective Length:37.50 in
I think the Yanmar belt is 37in

And here’s the pic i promised of the setup and bracket open.
Thanks for the help everyone.
