Westerbeke w30 occasionally over revs

Intermittently, my engine will climb a couple of hundred revs from cruise power for 10-15 seconds, then return. Usually not until the engine is warm, and very intermittently. On a recent cruise, didn't do it at all one day, once an hour or so the next.

Any clues on what to look for? One crew suggested a fuel system air leak, but I would think it'd hesitate instead of over revving......

Sounds like a fuel starvation issue. Filters , lines, plugged pickup tube in tank?

+1 It may only be running right for what you think is the surge time, starving the rest.

Re: Westerbeke w30 occasionally over revs

I'm running on a jury rigged fuel tank (Jerry can), new rancor filter. Haven't tried changing the secondary, but it was changed the week before I grabbed the boat. Will change that out when back at home.

Good point on maybe starving most time, never thought of that.

Hoping it wasn't a governed issue or something mechanical

If it was starvation, during running, I would think you could not increase the RPM's with the throttle.
I would think one faulty injector.
