Re: westerbeke fuel problem?

Well, it wasn't cheap ($800), but I'm rationalizing that it will give me piece of mind knowing that it was done right and I'll have a totally reliable engine for years to come.

Re: westerbeke fuel problem?

Were you able to procure parts for the engine from an alternate source than Westerbeke? ( since Westerbeke is VERY expensive)..

cheers

When I bought the boat (and engine), it came with boxes and boxes of brand new OEM parts that the previous owner had planned on using for the rebuild. I added everything up at one point and if I were to purchase the directly through Westerbeke, the cost would have been somewhere over $7k. I used everything except for the head gasket (compression was good and there was no sign of issues with the oil analysis or engine survey).

All told, I spent $1350 out of pocket for the following:
$300 - Rebuild exhaust manifold - the iron exhaust pipe was fused to the aluminum extrusion and no matter what I tried, I couldn't free it up. See thread here: https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...ld-281296.html
$250 - Rebuild injectors - I didn't know if there was anything wrong with them, but since I was in there, I figured it would be a lot easier to take care of them now than in the boat.
$800 - Rebuild injection pump - This was a legit problem. 10 years sitting in a garage turned the fuel inside the pump to bubblegum and I don't have the tools or equipment needed to make this right.

It was a lot of work and I picked away at it all winter, but I learned a lot about the engine and feel confident that I'll be able to troubleshoot any issues going forward and I'm pretty sure I'll have a reliable engine for the foreseeable future. A big thanks to everyone who gave me advice along the way.
