neither of my diesel engines turns off with key--not perkins 4-108 (didnt when it was a westerfreeked, either!!) nor my yanmar--both must be killed or idled down to nothing then , after silence has happened except for the screaming of the warning buzzer---turn key or toggle for end of engine use. my perkins is in a formosa, 1976 and my yanmar is in my ericson, 1979--although both engines were installed after the birth of the boats--yannie was overhauled and upgraded in 2003 and formosa had engine repower in 2009........

One of the boats I have sailed used the key to stop the engine. It also had an emergency fuel cut off in the port quarterberth.

Thank you for the replies i think I will start choking the engine out, then shut the key off to make sure my new alternator does not go belly up. sounds like the shut off solenoid or pull lever whichever it has is a pretty complicated system, also it does not shut off in idle its more like you have to go what I would call negative on the throttle and even then if it has been running for awhile I have to slip it into reverse at the lowest rpm I can to get it to choke out.

Did you read the manuals that GM provided?

They address the shutoff procedure.

One is electric solenoid...when the key is turned on, power energizes the solenoid allowing the engine to start.....when you release the key
the power from the Run side of the switch keeps it energized.....

Check your wiring first.

On is manual....you move the throttle back past idle
