Westerbeke 8btd curse is still haunting me

I'm in the uk and I've had to remove my generator out due to it not working .
It's a westerbeke 8 btd , it's never worked since we purchased the boat .
It turns out it need piston rings as some of you guys said in another thread .
Does anyone know the uk engine equiverlant ? There's talk some westerbekes are actually Perkins . If this be true then I could save thousands as I've nearly coughed my tea ( that's dinner to the guys in the states ) up , at prices on some u.s websites .
My uk injector guy took one look at the fuel injection pump and said its near identical to a uk ford .

I believe the Westerbeke 8 bdt was based on a Mitsubishi block, but I can't tell you which one.

Pretty sure it's a Mitsubishi S3L2 engine, used in lots of stuff, there's a brand new one on Ebay for 4500.00 for instance...

DougR

I'd bet this is likely right. It is for my 1983 W33, which is on larger end of the range that the 8kw was also apart of.

Yes, Westerbeke prices make it nearly uneconomical to rebuild the damn things. I have already prepared myself for the time where mine needs a rebuild. I'll just be installing a Beta.

I think there was another thread discussing the matter but I can't remember details. Maybe try google "Cruisersforum Westerbeke" or similar.
