Westerbeke 35B 2nd alternator

Has anybody installed a 2nd alternator on the exhaust side of this engine. I have changed the stock one with a Balmar but would love to have that stock one on to charge just the large house and keep the start charging to the stock. In case of failure the battery set up would allow me to duel charge.

Opps the stock alt would charge the start and the Balmar would charge the large house battery.

A second alt, the bracketing and custom pulley systems to drive it can get pretty pricey, pretty quickly.

An option most choose is to use an Echo Charger, Duo Charger, Automatic Combining Relay, Yandina Combiner or other charge management device to charge the start battery and then you feed the Balmar direct to the house bank. Properly set up, and I stress the term properly, the Balmar should outlast the boat. If you still feel nervouse simply carry a spare alt that can be swapped out in about 20 minutes.

I would suggest focusing on an alternative current source such as solar before going dual alts.
