Welp, the tarriffs are real

Ordered a Beta 35 in May, which is arriving mid June, and am being told now that an additional ~$1000 charge is being applied owing to the new tariffs. Whether it's a business looking to take advantage of a situation, or a real impact, it's a good reminder that tariffs are a tax on the consumer, not the exporter.

Going to see what I can negotiate.

It stems from Trumps personal experiences.. other people paid for his bankruptcies..

Re: Welp, the tarriffs are real

You have to expect this with all of these TACO tariffs. I've seen random prices that were startling. Some may be businesses getting greedy early. But, eventually, it will be everywhere. He will stop backing down on tariffs because it reflects on his manhood.

Remember, this is a guy who had six companies under his direction declare bankruptcy. To my knowledge, he is the only person ever to go bankrupt running a casino. The house never loses, except when the person running it doesn't have a clue.

He is trying his best to make the United States the seventh.

We all react in our own ways. Me, I go to restaurants less often, buy less stuff. If enough people react this way, we will have a recession. It won't affect me, but many people will suffer.

Sure, many people thought it was fun to stick it to the man by voting for Trump. But there is always a reckoning.

A friend has a wonderful boat for sale at a decent price. But the buyers aren't there due to the economic instability. Same thing with my neighbor trying to sell his house.

Eventually, people will remember that what they want is a decent life with a minimum of surprises. Controversy may be fun at first, but it goes stale very quickly.

Re: Welp, the tarriffs are real

Tariffs are the US version of VAT. Funny how people from VAT countries are harping on our Federal version of that tax.

In the ideal economic world there would be no tarrifs, protection quotas, govt subsidies of local industries, manipulation of the currencies, etc. Tell that to the Chinese who probably practice all of those to get to where tbey've gotten. Or to the Europeans who subsidize their major industries to be be competitive.

At some point, if we want to remain a sovereign nation and not just the dumbed down consumers of cheap foreign junk, we need to swallow the bitter pill and get back to what we did best when we went from an agrarian backwater of the British empire to the world's top economy.

Rather than just harping on tariffs I would wish that ALL countires drop theirs as well as all subsidies, preference gimmicks, etc. and just do the "Adam Smith" free trade and let the chips fall where they may.

Re: Welp, the tarriffs are real

I believe the Beta 35 is made from Kubota diesel engine and many of Kubota's engines are made in the USA.

I would challenge them to provide country of origin documentation and ask for copy of the tariff duty payment form.

Request transparency of the Liberation Day charges.

Lincolnshire, IL
Kubota manufactures tractor engines in the United States at Kubota Engine America, headquartered in Lincolnshire, IL. The facility in Illinois produces diesel engines and spark-ignition engines. It has been operational since 1982 and has produced over 200,000 engines.

Re: Welp, the tarriffs are real

I'm not sure if the Kubota base engines are made in Japan or in the US actually -- but either way, they are imported to the UK where they get modified for marine use and I'm guessing customs views that as sufficient modifcation to be considered of U.K. origin, but I am not at all well versed in the Rules of Origin criteria.

It looks like the current tariff rate is 10% if I'm reading correctly which would amount to more than the ~$1000 I was informed of if the burden was transferred all to me.

Bet ya the beta dealer has several in stock in their local warehouse.
I know the dealers in Seattle do. Just using the current atmosphere to make a few extra bucks .

Re: Welp, the tarriffs are real

We had a small set of kitchen cabinets on order on 29 April, 2025, through a Brick and Motar Cabinet shop in Fort Myers, FL for delivery/install on 14 - 16 May 2025. Cabinets are manufactured overseas, and imported through a third party Vendor.

Total cost: including install, and taxes was quoted (and contracted) at $6,249.00. We specifically asked about tariffs, and were told they wouldn't make any difference.

Vender kept postponing install, and finally stated that the "Container" had been delayed in "Customs", and was to be released the first week of June (now), but the cost including the new tariffs would now be $12,414.42, instead of $6,249.00!

Cost of delivery, and install remained the same at $2,040.00, but the cost of the cabinet themselves went from $4,209.00 to $10,374.42 due to "recent regulatory changes"

Also, not only is the consumer paying the additional "Tariffs", but the State of Florida is charging an ADDITIONAL roughly $431.00 in Sales Tax on the Tariff Increase! So, and additional TAX on an additional TAX.

That's a WIN/WIN for the Federal Gov't, and the State of Florida . . . Right?!? That's a good thing, Right?!? assuming the purchase went through . . .

Soooo, in OUR case, our REAL LIFE CASE, we declined to pay the additional $$$, and got a refund of our Deposit. With the help of a friend in the neighborhood, we are going to be building our own cabinets . . .

REAL LIFE Ramifications :
  • The Brick and Mortar Cabinet Shop lost a sale.
  • The installer lost an install
  • The Vendor now has a set of cabinets he may not be able to sell, but for which he's already had to pay the tariff on, which in this case turned out to be more than the original RETAIL cost of the cabinets.
  • With enough cancelled orders, and less sales at the new "pricing", the Brick and Mortar Cabinet Shop may not be able to pay his storefront rent, and may go out of business. His daughter, who works in the Brick and Mortar Cabinet Shop, and who was supposed to start College in the Fall, is now planning on working for at least one year, in a new job, because her Father told her he can't afford to keep her employed in the Cabinet Shop, and now doesn't think they will have the money to pay her tuition, delaying her entrance into College. . . .
  • The College will have one less student come Fall
  • The Vendor, who has imported cabinets, and paid tariffs on said cabinets, may not be able to sell those cabinets at over TWICE the original cost, may not be able to pay his rent, his employees, etc
  • The landlord(s) may have a vacant shop/warehouse(s), for which he STILL has to pay property taxes, mortgage etc, with no offsetting rental income
  • The consumer (us) will build the cabinets with labor (ours and neighbors) for which no taxes will be collected, no medical insurance collected, etc
  • Materials providers WILL get some business, including sales tax, but the amount will be at a vastly reduced rate . . .
  • We the final consumer chose NOT to stimulate the economy with purchases at an unsustainable price (for us), but instead, will hold on to our $$ until we have more confidence in the economy . . . and, by the way, once (and if) we feel more confident, the cabinets will already be built and installed (by us and the neighbor), and that is one purchase (with all it's trickle down $$ ramifications) that will not be made when the economy improves . . . if it does . . . .
If the above happens often enough . . . I believe that precipitates what is called a recession . . .

I hear Lee Greenwood is considering a new release of his iconic Song "Proud to be an American", re-titled as "Sad to be an American"

Kinda funny how some people don't understand the differences between VAT and tarrifs. I've explained the difference before but have given up as most who believe they are the same have drunk too much Loolaid to ever change their minds. They tend to be the ame people that believd Trump when he said that exporting counties paid the tarrifs.

Re: Welp, the tarriffs are real

I do like the fact that imported cabinets are now doubled in price. Order yours fron N. Carolina. Same goes for boats, clothing, you name it. Enough is enough. If you can't afford American made perhaps you're living beyond your means. Or wish to live beyond your means.

Re: Welp, the tarriffs are real

Well 10% tariff is a lot less than 145%, so sounds like a bargain.

If it makes you feel better, one could consider it a Value Added Tax as if you were located in Canada, Mexico or the EU. Albeit I never consider taxation a value addition.

So add 9.25% sales taxation for Monterey, Calfornia upon the 10% Federal customs duty.

So all in about 20% increase arising from the privilege taxes in the cost or repowering for you. Enjoy the privilege.
