VOLVO TMD 30A serial number missing

Hi Folks,
I've been looking online and at the engine. The plate has been removed as I can see the outline on the paint.
I can only find parts numbers on the rest of the engine.

There is a plate on the tranny. Anyone know if there is a way to reverse look-up to see if there is a record of tranny and engine Serial #'s?

It is a 1984 Kadey Krogen Manatee and Pre-purchase Mechanical Inspection folks would like serial number.
I checked all the manuals, Log books, etc, and it was not there on anything.

Online showed a stamped number but could not find stamp (besides part #'s) on this engine.

Depending on the engine, the serial number might be stamped in the block as well as having a plate riveted to the block. Look very closely around the plate location as well as on the block on the opposite side near the flywheel housing.



If your engine and gear box were both warranty registered together there is a chance that you could find the engine serial number by searching on the gear box serial number. This is best done by a dealer, as they will have access to that info in their online system. If you have a non Volvo transmission, like a Borg Warner, things could be tougher.

Volvoes were sold with a small booklet to keep track of maintenance. They had the engine and box numbers penned there/\.


Where do you have that booklet ?

Lady Fish lots of older boat engines have no serial number. Even old paperwork is no guarantee on a 1984 yacht that the engine numbers match. Sometimes an old insurance or registration document lists the engine serial number.

Thanks for the reply. I will take an extendable mirror down and look again at the block - hopefully I’ll find it next time- I had looked around the head gasket thinking it should be right below. Engine is pretty clean so hope I will find it.
I did contact my Volvo folks but I guess a lot of the records at Volvo were transferred to different data storage systems through the years and they said probably no luck matching the Volvo tranny Serial # now.
Perhaps there is an original owner out there somewhere in the future. I did see some other names on the documentation search. But as far back as 14 years there is no record on any paperwork.
A lot of the manuals are missing too- there is a parts catalog but no workshop manual.
On my current boat I have several- a condensed version and a longer version.
I did check all the paperwork and had the Volvo folks look up previous owners to see if they had done work on the engine in the past but no luck. So vessel may have been out of town.
Here is hoping it turns up- probably written inside someone’s manual someplace.

Thank you for your reply—-As it’s a 1984 vessel, I have no idea why it’s missing-but hey it’s younger than me!
So good to write it down in the engine room and on all the paperwork—or duct tape the plate to engine compartment if it falls off.

Well I can see where the plate used to be as there is a little corner still there. The tranny does have the Volvo plate just like my current boat. Maybe it will turn up someday- I’m sure stranger things have happened.

If the boat ever went to Mexico, the engine serial number had to be on the Temporary Import Permit (TIP)

I will look into it if those records are archived online. That would likely be true for Canada as well.
