Volvo Penta sail drive blowing oil

I have a D2 40 with 130S drive and it keeps blowing oil out the fill cap I guess, every time I check there is oil all over, maybe 100 or 200 ml but the level does not seem to drop much, I am using multigrade engine oil as recommended and the oil is clean, no water. I may well have overfilled it a few years back but the level is correct now, any ideas?

Re: Volvo Penta sail drive blowing oil

If I have the right image in mind, the oil filler is at the top by the valve rockers. Could this just be a bad gasket on the filler cap? If it's at all like my engine (DD 453) the rockers spray oil all over the place.

Re: Volvo Penta sail drive blowing oil

If you indeed are talking about the fill cap for the sail drive, and this happens when motoring, I'd install a new o-ring and see what happens.

Ilf oil is discharged at rest, especially in changing temperature, as in cold weather, my Yanmar SD20 used to do this and I attributed it to the housing contracting from the cold more so than the oil and steel innards.

My solution was to install an expansion tank for the oil. Solves a couple problems.
