Volvo penta ms2ae gearbox help

Started up this morning with no motion, go down the hatch to find the oil fill cap blown off and the shaft sticking up through the hole. I found a repair manual that appears to be above my head. Anyone have a suggestion on where to get one rebuilt? I also understand i cant take this out with the boat in the water? If this is the case i may need a place to swap out a core for a refurbed one. Also, can anyone tell me the difference between and ms2ae and an ms2ad? I found an ad model for sale that looks right and maybe they can be interchanged?

Hello Tkeeth,

Sorry to hear of your problems.

There is very little difference between the MS2A-D and MS2A-E....the "E" was the follow-on model to the D. The difference was that the E model had shot peened gear wheels for a bit more strength, and the E used heavy gear oil instead of engine oil.

I cant see any reason that the gear cannot be removed from the boat with the boat still in the water unless there is something that would preclude sliding the shaft back a little. Just shut the cooling water thru hull valve, disconnect the hoses, cable and mounting bolts and pull it out.

What engine is it mounted to? There shouldnt be any problem interchanging the models if they are the same reduction ratio.

I have a new-in-the-box MS2A-D gear in the 2.40:1 ratio if you are interested in a new unit. (There were two ratios available, 2.04:1 and 3.00:1)

I found your thread as my MS2AD 3:1 gearbox for my MD2040 has broken.

Im struggling to find a 3:1 replacement MS2AD - a few 2:1 on eBay which will impact performance and require a new prop.

Do you know if I can just use a MS2AE as a direct replacement? Or will I need to customise my MD2040?

There is no problem using an MS2AE gearbox to replace an MS2AD gearbox. Of course, as you pointed out, the reduction ratio should remain the same to avoid performance issues.

I managed to get a 3:1 MS2AE on eBay for £450 and will be fitting it this weekend
