Volvo Penta 2003 throttle
When reading about a cold start, it says reset the throttle to about half. I've tried this and note the prop shaft is still engaged. Is this normal?
I have a single throttle lever with no buttons or extras.
Someone did suggest that I could pull the lever OUT to disengage gears, but it does not want to co-operate.

Cold start.
Engine off. Pull the engine stop all the way out, then advance the throttle to wide open, then return to neutral. Turn the key to start.
Works great.
Should be able to download the owners manual still form the volvo site, if you cant find it PM me and I will send you a copy.

Re: Volvo Penta 2003 throttle
Thanks. But my question is, with the throttle forward, the transmission is engaged. Is this normal?
I would have thought one would start the engine in neutral.

Re: Volvo Penta 2003 throttle
to clarify, moving the throttle to wide open is done before you engage the starter:
engine is off
1. pull out the engine stop lever,
2, advance throttle to wide open the return to neutral.
3. close engine stop.
4 engage starter.

I haven't seen all throttle levers but every one that I have seen does have a mechanism to disengage the transmission and still move the throttle.
It is not normal to start with the transmission engaged.
Perhaps yours is simply a pull out type that has seized or gummed up - don't ask me how I know this .

Re: Volvo Penta 2003 throttle
Wotname, you are a gem.
I just went out to the boat and pulled and prodded the throttle, but nothing.
BUT, by pushing the lever IN, it disengaged the gear linkage.
Thank you.

Dunno about 'a gem' but thank you anyway!
As with most things in life, they are easy if you know how but difficult if you don't!
Happy starting .

Re: Volvo Penta 2003 throttle
To set the cold start mechanism on this engine I understand the sequence is to 1) put throttle on half way (with gear in neutral), pull out the engine stop all the way and then back in (this sets the cold start mechanism), then push starter button.
