Volvo MS10L- gearbox

hi all !

an oil dipstick problem on this gearbox...
only the big nut remains, but the rod is gone
someone would have this type of gearbox, and could give the dimensions of the dipstick to redo a new one ?

many thanks !

Wow! You are unfortunately dependent on someone else having one of those engines, because Volvo won't answer your question, warns against overfilling, and wants $175 for a replacement dipstick, ordered only through your dealer. That's NASTY.

Re: Volvo MS10L- gearbox

The MS10L gearbox is basically a rebranded Hurth HBW 10 /ZF 10M gearbox with a few minor changes, so perhaps you can find a dipstick from one of those or get someone to measure a dipstick from one of those.

Alternately, a simple solution.........drain and pump all the oil from your transmission. Reinstall the drain plug and pour .35 liter of ATF into the housing.
Let it settle a few minutes and carefully measure down to the fluid level from the top (outside) of the transmission housing. This fluid level should be the “full” mark on your dipstick.

Re: Volvo MS10L- gearbox

yes of course, its like that.
but without the rod, when running, the oil rises and exits through the needle hole on the bolt
hence the idea of trying to make one again...

Re: Volvo MS10L- gearbox

Did you recover the missing tube? If not, this is one of those occasions where I’d really go the extra mile to retrieve it. You could be lucky and it might just drop out of the drain hole if you undo the plug but if that fails I’d get that little gearbox out and split the case to remove the tube, leaving it in there would not be an option for me. Is there anything in the history of the gearbox to indicate why the tube fell off?
Pete.

Re: Volvo MS10L- gearbox

thanks skipperpete,
but the rod is lost, it is not in the box.
I just would like the dimensions and a description/pics of the rod to redo a new one ...

Re: Volvo MS10L- gearbox

OK, so it may be that the oil is being thrown out the breather hole because the level is too high... because of no dipstick...or maybe not...

In any event here are photos of a dipstick which I think will help you make a replacement for your lost dipstick. These are from an MS 25 gearbox, so the dimensions may not perfectly match your MS 10 box, but the idea should work OK.

The dipstick is a hollow steel tube, pressed into the 17mm hex filler cap. The breather hole in the tube is 2mm diameter and it is located 5 mm down from the underside of the cap. The breather hole in the tube is about 180* opposite from the vent hole exit in the cap. The “full” mark on the dipstick is 10 mm up from the bottom of the dipstick. The bottom of the dipstick is the “low” mark.

Hope this helps you.. Think about what Pete said regarding the lost part.

Re: Volvo MS10L- gearbox

Measure the liquid level with the proper amount of oil in the box and you will know where to put the “full” mark on the stick.
