Volvo MD2B Hydraulic Transmission ?

Greetings,

I'm considering purchasing a sailboat that has a Volvo MD2B with a hydraulic transmission. The owner states that the transmission won't go into any gears because the "three-way hydraulic valve" needs to be replaced/repaired.

Does anyone have knowledge of this system in order to make an educated guess on what it's going to take to get the transmission working and the potential cost?

MD2's are so old I wouldn't consider it a viable engine with even a minor failure.

Indeed, Volvo stopped making the MD2B in 1975.

Parts, when available, are treated as priceless as antiques.

FWIW: Item 10, the "Direction Valve", is OUT of PRODUCTION (no replacement part listed).

Thanks for the input. The MB2B engine was recently serviced and checks out OK but the transmission is a big "?" due to the presumed faulty "direction valve". I hear that the valve can be repaired versus replaced and might be willing to give the owner the $$ to have the valve repaired and then "see what happens".

There is another same make model boat , locally, that is listed with a broker at four times the price . Budgeting $6k-$8k for a future engine replacement still a lot less expensive then the boat offered by the broker.

Ideally, I would like to use the current MD2B setup for a few years and then re-power, when I have a better idea of my needs.

consider pulling the valve and taking it to a local hydraulics repair facility.
