Both engines are good reliable engines.
The
Volvo Penta D2-60
engine is a new development from the existing D2-55. To narrow the
power gaps in their engine range, VP has taken the D2-55 and de-tuned it a bit to come up with the D2-50, and added a turbo and aftercooler to come up with the D2-60. This makes a series of three engines, D2-50, D2-60 and D2-75 that are all based on the widely used 2.2 liter
Perkins 404D base engine.
According to VP the D2-60 should be available for order by year end, and the D2-55 will phase out of production by mid year '17 for the US and somewhat earlier for EU.
The
Perkins 404 series engine is an industrial based engine used around the world for numerous industrial and
power generation applications. It is a mechanically governed IDI engine and has been used by VP for many years.
The
Yanmar 4JH57 is, like the D2-55, an industrial based engine that has been around for a long time and has come thru numerous development iterations. This latest version has an electronically controlled common rail
fuel injection system.
Both engines are equipped with high output alternators and serpentine drive belts, fresh
water cooling, and are available in both inboard or
saildrive configurations.
