VOLVO D1-30 Exhaust Elbow

I have a VP D1-30 which now has 1,900 hours on it. I thoroughly maintain this engine and it runs perfectly. When running at 2,400/2,500 RPM my sailboat moves at about 6.5 knots and this is the speed I normally operate it at. At 1,300 hours I removed the exhaust elbow and found it to be 50% blocked. I cleaned out the carbon/salt accumulation and reinstalled it. Recently, I removed the exhaust elbow again and discovered that after 600 hours it is 25% blocked. Is this normal? Should I replace the exhaust elbow as the casting appears to be rusting from the inside (difficult to determine how much material has been eroded away)?

I don't know yr engine but our Yanmar says to inspect exhaust elbow every 300 hrs. Doubt that anyone does that but it's an indication it's a problem area.
I replaced it with one I fabricated out of schedule 10 316L ss. Yanmar wanted a kings ransom for their elbow & I know 316L lasts way longer than cast-iron
If you decide to replace yours, assuming the VP D1-30's is cast-iron, I'd try HDI marine or exhaust elbow.com. Will be cheaper & longer lasting.

I would replace it. If it fails it can be bad.

HDI marine in Vancouver, WA ,USA sells a cast stainless exhaust elbow for the D1-30 engine. "hdimarine.net"

Parts For Engines in the UK also sell this same elbow, but their site says "out of stock" at the moment. It might pay to contact them......

For those of you who have gone with a stainless exhaust elbow, did you do anything to avoid galvanic corrosion with the carbon steel it mates to? And did you use stainless connecting hardware?

Thx I have contacted them , waiting on reply. I think my yard Artemis , contacted them on my behalf and was told none available.
