Volvo 40 hp with sail drive and rubber gasket
I have a md2040 with a sail drive and where the sail drive goes through the hull there is a rubber gasket that fits tight to the drive and is glued to the hull. I'm not sure it's purpose except to make the water move smoothly along the hull. I have lost two of these items. Anyone have an idea what product I should use to glue it to the hull?

What have tried so far? I have had success with products like 3m 4000. Even 5200 would probably be ok.

Re: Volvo 40 hp with sail drive and rubber gasket
I except I used the 4200. I seemed to have a problem getting it to fit tight up against the haul. That might have been some of my problems. Any ideas?

I wedge a flat board up against it and held it in place by a long board that reached the ground.

I'm thinking this time to take a extra batten to hold the ends down then support the sides the way you suggest.

Re: Volvo 40 hp with sail drive and rubber gasket
Hi.
Had mine replaced last month (in Algeciras) and the yard used polyeurathane sealant. It might be a bit early to tell but have sailed about 800 miles since and it looks good, though I did have to trim a little edge that was lifting.
I personally prepped the hull first so it was very clean and well keyed.

Re: Volvo 40 hp with sail drive and rubber gasket
What I did with my saildrive legs, I took off the rubber seal! and filled the gap with sika no more problems I have sailed from Malaysia to Turkey and the job I did is still perfect, whenever I need to take out the leg I will just cut out the Sika and replace with the same material (how often do we take out the legs) that's my fix for a constant problem with that rubber seal.

Which Sika product did you use? I went on the Internet and there are a number of products.

What I did regarding the use of Sika on my saildrive legs, first I cleaned as best I could without taking out the legs (a lot of crap up there) then I squeezed up some Sika, on top of the first layer I put small pieces of plastic honeycone inside (saves on the Sika) then I just kept putting the Sika in until they were full it took about 10 tubes to fill them both up (Yanmar SD 20s) The Sika I used was 291 from memory, the paint stays on ok and no more problems with the seals flapping about or disappearing.

Had the same problem, contact glue did not hold. Now used Sikaflex 291 and it seems to work just great.

Lindbergh, you used silks flex 291 as a glue or filled the cavity?

Re: Volvo 40 hp with sail drive and rubber gasket
I used it as a glue, that was after hearing that this is what the professional marine workshops here is Sweden used. Last spring i used contact glue (did everything by the book, but still it failed) and it got loose while cruising in Scotland and managed to get in to the propeller. Thought I lost a blade or something until I managed to dive down and clear the bl**dy rubber-thing.

Lindbergh, how long has it lasted this time?
I'm coming to Sweden to sail this year again. A friend has a boat and we sail in the Baltic a few weeks every year. Love the saunas after a day of sailing!
