Volvo 2003T

Interested in a sloop which has this engine. Can other past owner please chime in and let me know if this engine has any inherent problems or did you like them from late 1980's. Thanks

Re: Volvo 2003T

the oil coolers have a dissimilar metals design fault, and corrode very quickly, plus the engines were only designed for a working life of 3850 hours

Re: Volvo 2003T

Budget for a repower in the purchase price.

Owner of both a 2003 and 2003t. Both are bad 2003t is worse of the two. Turbo replacement is ubobtanium anywhere else but through Volvo-Penta = $3500 plus shipping and a lot of waiting + whatever ridiculous VAT which could add 40% on top of that.

Buy a Beta and be done with it.

We referred to ours as the Green Devil. It gave a lot of years of service. It was just death by a thousand paper cuts at the end.

Re: Volvo 2003T

Our 2003T had well over 5000 hours when we sold the boat, and running great.

Over the years we swore a lot at the cooling system, as the heat exchanger and oil coolers are true pieces of excrement and basically unobtainable. We finally solved these issues with aftermarket units (from Lenco) mounted off the engine (only very minor modifications to the engine needed).

The turbo is a readily-available unit (separate from Volvo), and easily rebuildable by any competent shop (we had ours done in Mexico).

The block has been bullet-proof. Injectors are Bosch and no issues.

We blew the coupler between the engine and tranny, but it was fixable in Mexico. A known weakness. Worth inspecting.

All in all, although we worried a bit about the Volvo, our only regret is not modifying the cooling system years earlier.

I was wondering about that engine when I saw the ad for that boat, it was the only potential weak link in an exceptional boat.

Our Adams has a lowish hours RWC VP2003 and saildrive, we have an intimate relationship but it still runs fine.

A friend replaced their RWC 2003 after 8500 hrs, it was losing compression but still running OK.

I actually have a low hours VP2030 in the shed in case it plays up, would rather replace it than repair it.

Our V40 has a Yanmar 4JH, an order of magnitude better than the VP, even allowing for the V drive and almost inaccessible stern gland...

Re: Volvo 2003T

Yeah, I got mine with a bad reputation, but it has been running since 1991 without letting anybody down, though the hour meter says 1062 hours only. Had the essential gearbox mod before that stripped the spines. Had the heat exchanger and the oil cooler off about 3 years ago - as reported by the very reliable previous owner - and they were both good.

It smokes when cold and there is a bit of oil in the exhaust water, which keeps me awake at night but probably only the result of slightly glazed bores from too much idling.

Toying with the idea of replacing it with a Beta 35 anyway, mostly so I can go to a parallel hybrid drive (when I win the lottery, ha ha)
