Vetus 65 Vs Yanmar 55 engine

Hi team,
I am getting quotes for repowering my boat. So far I have a 55hp Yanmar and a 65HP Vetus (based on the Hyundai engine). They are both about the same money - are new and being installed by good dealers. Obviously the Vetus bang for buck is better deal - but I am wondering what one I should go with (Yanmar is Marine engine...designed as such, the Vetus is a marinised one from a car/truck etc), Yanmar will have better resale I guess...but on a 40" 13 tonne boat I am sure the Vetus will not rev very hard - does anyone have any experience that may help me make up my mind.

Hi, I have a Yanmar 55 in a 15 tonne yacht. It is 10 years old, 2,700 hours, runs on the smell of an oily rag, been half way round the world consuming all sorts of dubious supplies of diesel. Faultless!!

Thanks Spindrift...I guess what is important here is the "known" vs the "unknown" and in boating I have seen way too much "unknown" that has caused me pain...anyone else with some advice?

I like Yanmars personally. I have one that has put up with my abuse for years. It's easy enough to work on, its efficient. To be honest I've never worked on a Vetus, I'm not sure why I'm replying. boredom I suppose. Still, Yanmars are probably easier to get parts, filters, experienced mechanics etc.. good luck

Yanmar has the best worldwide service, and is the most reliable engine on the market. No reason to use any other brand.

My BS meter has just pegged--what published statistics are you basing those claims on?

I thought cummins and kubota had about the best rep for worldwide service, reliability and parts in remote areas

Not sure how many yanmars you see in commercial workboats (never saw any while looking at trawlers) so that says something to me.

I have never seen any statistics but overwhelmingly the most part suppliers I have seen in my travels have been Yanmar and Volvo.
Some Kubota based engines parts are reasonably readily available but finding and dealing with none marine dealers in foreign countries can be a challenge. Generally it's the marinized parts that fail far more often and there dealer network is very patchy.
When you have waited two months you realise the importance of good supply of spare parts.
