Universal M 25 identification

I've pulled the engine from my 30 foot Capital Newport and believe it to be from all indications a universal M 25. The only markings I can find are on the exhaust housing and that is a number 299911-D and then separate from that in a larger font is cast the letter T. based on that information does anybody have a way to be very specific about which engine I have in order to order engine parts. I've looked at other sources on the Internet and the M 25 seems to be equivalent to a Kubota D950.

Re: Universal M 25 identification

The M25 is a Kubota D850 (21 hp)

The M25XP is D950 (23 hp)

The engines are essentially identical unless you're tearing them down. The XP has a 3 inch HX, the M25 is 23 inch but most of us have upgraded to the larger HX. The XP also came with the upgraded alternator bracket. If you have an M25 without it, get one, immediately.

Re: Universal M 25 identification

I'm going to put a rebuild kit in it including new pistons and bearings so I do need to identify exactly which one I have. It has the appearance of an older model at least that's my impression I can't imagine it's the XP but I have to be able to figure out a way to make sure.

Do you know what is unique about the M25XPB?

Re: Universal M 25 identification

Westerbeke Bulletin #193 describes the faulty alternator bracket that must be replaced.
It was on early Universal M18, M25 and M25XP engines (before 1993). The conversion kit is PN# 256891. You can search their site.

The older M25 ceased production late 1992 early 1993. The M25XPA replaced the M25 in March of 1993 and was produced through August 1996. This was a 23hp @3200rpm motor used in my '95 Catalina 30 MKIII. It has the upgraded alternator bracket.

Good luck with your rebuild. They are great engines.
