Here in Oz they take a couple of forms:

The simplest, probably what we are thinking of here, are L or C steel sections, relatively thick (5 or more mm), galvanised and used mostly when you are putting a window or door into a preexisting wall, brick mostly but other forms too.

There is another sort that are made of much thinner steel (less than 3 mm) and are formed from a kind of crinkle-cut chip style of steel which you fill with wet concrete and allow to cure while supported. These are used mostly when building windows or doorways into new brick walls.

Incidentally, the thin steel crinkly sort really had me worried when I first used them building my last house. I just couldn’t believe they’d be strong enough, particularly as they couldn’t even support their own weight. But, by golly, when the concrete set... insanely strong!

My boat uses 4" x 4" square Aluminum tubing. It's got a couple large holes bored in the top to access the heads of the bolts securing it to the hull.

Steel angles with timber infills. Engine is sitting in position, waiting for a friend to make the coupling adapter.

Actually, I’m going to repo all that space for storage when I get some time.

But in lieu of your suggestion, I might wait till the weather warms a little.
