Throttle reversal

I'm working on a Nordic 44 with a Volvo engine and Yacht Specialties pedestal. I believe the Volvo is not native to the vessel.

The issue I have is that the engine controls on the pedestal work in reverse. That is, you pull back on the throttle to rev the engine and push forward on the shift lever to engage reverse.

I was able to fix the problem with the transmission by flipping the shift lever on the tranny upside down. I can't do that with the throttle lever on the engine because the stops (idle and max) don't engage with the lever when its upside down. Yes, I know this because I tried it.

I looked at switching the levers in the pedestal but when I do that, they interfere with the wheel brake.

Any ideas out there?

Re: Throttle reversal

I encountered the same problem when I repowered a 4-108 with a VP D2-55 engine and a Yacht Specialities pedestal.

The engine needs the throttle cable to “pull” to rev up, but the YS pedestal supplies a “push” action when the throttle lever is moved forward.

I resolved the issue by making a bracket which attached to the existing throttle arm on the engine and this bracket extended across the pivot point of the throttle shaft. This effectively reversed the direction requirement and allowed the “Push” cable action to rev up the engine. Also slightly modified the cable anchor bracket to provide a fair lead to the new throttle arm location.

Re: Throttle reversal

Here's a couple of photos of the brackets mentioned above. It works fine, with about 600 hours of use.

Something else that you could do to reverse direction is make up a plate/bracket with a bellcrank mounted on it. One cable comes into the plate and attaches to one side of the bellcrank, and a second cable mounts to the other end of the bellcrank. that way when one cable pushes, the other cable pulls.

Re: Throttle reversal

I don't understand the problem. The throttle should operate the same in forward as in reverse. I know that mine does.

Re: Throttle reversal

I believe there is a right and a left throttle quadrant, and you have the wrong one.
So either buy an opposite side quadrant or add a bell crank as a bell crank will change directions.
