Substitute gasket material?

I am in Sicily and am having a hard time finding very thin gasket material for raw water pumps etc. Someone has suggested using the material from the bags that holds cereal in boxes. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Re: Substitute gasket material?

The chart paper idea sounds very good. My wife suggested baking paper which might actually be too thin.

Re: Substitute gasket material?

Big ship engineers were always wanting cancelled charts from the second mate... gaskets - for the making of...

But that was the old BA charts on the heavy paper... I don't think the new paper is much chop...

Re: Substitute gasket material?

For things which do not get hot like raw water pumps you can use plastics like section separators or even book covers.

Re: Substitute gasket material?

probably try shiny magazine covers I s'pose. When you do get to somewhere you can look for something decent - a good engineering supplier should be able to get you nitrile infused gasket material - the problem with ordinary gasket material is that when it is used in raw water systems the salt water/zinc oxide mix osmoses causing that ugly white powdery mess around the galleys. I've found the nitrile stuff is effective in stopping this, whats more it seems to work better dry - ie no sealant/gasket goo/hylomar/whatever you may be using.
