Squealing Noise at Different RPMs While Underway
I recently purchase a used boat with an inter-cooled vetus diesel engine. The engine seems to run well under various revs while docked. However when I am in forward gear moving through the water, I begin to hear a squeeling noise at certain revs. If I throttle up a bit the noise goes away and if I increase it even more it comes back. Is this an engine or drive problem. Any ideas what could be wrong ?

Sounds like a loose belt when there is pressure of pushing the boat through the water. Keep her tied to the dock in gear, and rev her up....... i2f

squeeling stuffing box ?
Thankss, I will check.
I had one of the crew go below when the squeeling occured and he thought that it sounded like it came from aft of the engine. I have a center cockpit rig, so access to everything around the engine is easy.
My boat also has a water injected stuffing box. I was told to simply hand tighten the packing nut until the water stopped when I launched it. Thought this may be an area where the noise might be coming from ?

usually a belt, do you have a high output alternator? maybe it doesnt start until you reacha a certain output/rpm....

I dont know if I have a high output alternator. Another thing to check.

check your raw water inlet, and the pump. If the inlet is getting blocked by crustaceans, the pump may be running dry - but you would also see an increase in engine temperature.
alternator/water pump drive belts - slack or wrong size (width)
high output alternator kicking into charge with a poor drive belt (notched is best)

Get a new belt or tighten old one or (least favorable) treat old belt with belt conditioner.

Just a guess, the suffing box. More then one yard has been known to over tighten them when the boat is initially launched.

Do you mean by 'intercooled' that the engine has a turbocharger?? They can squeal when the bearings go out.

If your boat has an old fashioned packed stuffing box, it should leak a occasional drip whilst underway. This seepage keeps the packing cool. If it is one of the modern carbon ring type, sometimes they squeal if the boat has been out of the water and they are not bled before use. Regards, Richard.

Sometimes cutlass bearings can start squealing at specific shaft RPM's. My first guess is a drive belt.

If it is a belt and it has been squealing for a while you will find black "splatter" in line with the belt on the walls and top of the engine room.
Over time as the belt wears it also gets thinner. Eventually further tightening is not helpful as the contact area is bottomed in the pulley. The grip of the belt is actually the sides of the belt.
Buy 2 and keep a spare on board.
Squealing at different RPM's is common. Often you can find an RPM where the squealing is not noticeable or it stops.

Same problem, but Ruggerini engine to silette drive leg. Squealing increases then clunk and no more squealing for up to a minute. Bearings? The shafts are mis-aligned and fix is in hand for that.
