Re: Smoke is unburnt diesel?

problem could come from many directions....
continuous blue smoke.....typically burning oil.....
white smoke....most often is steam....can come from worn gaskets, pinholes in exhaust systems, etc...
black smoke....unburned fuel...
could also be a mixture of all three....grey/white....oil/water (steam)

no, you can't clean injectors yourself....you need to remove them and take them to a diesel shop, where they can check them.

you can try additives, but I've never come across any that were much good....

but, if the engine is running, and not producing too much smoke, it's not the end of the world either.

Re: Smoke is unburnt diesel?

when I had white smoke it was the exhaust elbow that needed to be replaced.

Re: Smoke is unburnt diesel?

Check the air intake to the engine compartment. If it is blocked, or the fan not working, the cylinders could be getting too much diesel for the amount of air available.

Agree with Gonesail "replace exhaust elbow"
Yanmars are notorious for clogged exhaust elbow.
I had to replace my 3banger elbow twice....every 5 years.....now use S.S. elbow.

Re: Smoke is unburnt diesel?

Volvo is much the same....my exhaust manifold developed a pinhole on the inside, allowing hot steaming seawater to enter the elbow before the little little hose connection..this caused a lot of white smoke/steam......besides that, when the engine shut down, pressure from the hot sea water would continue to drip down, causing endless problems.
