Smoke from old Evinrude 10hp outboard engine

Dear cruisers,

I have purchased a Waarschip 725 with an old (> 30 years) Evinrude 10hp outboard engine. During a trip last week, the engine was smoking quite a lote - even after having it running for more than an hour (please see attached video).

My question is now, is this something serious or possibly just too much oil? Can I still use it or does it need to get repaired urgently?

Many thanks and all the best
Christoph

PS: The engine was maintained recently in a boat shop.

Re: Smoke from old Evinrude 10hp outboard engine

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, Christoph.

As you suspect, my first guess would be oil/fuel ratio too high.

How old was the oil/fuel mixture? It may have been the proper ratio but some gas evaporated leaving behind a bit too much oil.

Re: Smoke from old Evinrude 10hp outboard engine

Thank you for the quick answers!

The mixture is about 3 months old.
You don't think that the smoke is water that condensates, right?

I will try and add more petrol as a starting point

Many thanks again!

Best thing to do is dispose of the old fuel and mix a fresh measured petrol/oil ratio batch for that type of outboard 50:1 or 100:1, check manufacturers specs and throw in a new set of plugs and hopefully this will resolve the issue?
Fuels cheap enough these days Good luck

I haven't seen the video. I would mix new stuff. That way you're sure of the ratio.

Two strokes smoke. I haven't seen the video so I can't tell you if I think it is excessive. I'm reading this thread on my phone.

Snapshot

I was unable to open the video. Water condensate would be steam. Looks like water is flowing through.
If smoke is bluish color then oil mixture problem as stated above is likely correct. I would dump the old fuel and start with a tank of fresh with the proper oil mix and see if that solves the problem. Check the spark plugs to see if they are fouled or excessively oily. Whith a lot of hours running time, the rings could be allowing blowby.

White smoke is water getting into combustion chamber(bad head gasket).
Blue smoke is too much oil.
If compression is good the rings should be ok,just replace fuel with proper mixture or run the old stuff through the motor.Too much oil won't hurt the engine other than fouling the plugs a bit.

Old fuel with maybe too much oil is a definite possibility. First step: Get all fuel out of it and put fresh mix in and see what happens.

Along with all of the suggestions, run the motor with a load up to temp and it will probably clear-out. The older carb engines like to smoke when it is first started

In the 70s fuel/oil ratio was 25 to 1. Then in the
80's 50 to 1. Recent 100 to 1.

Since 1964 the mixture has been 50:1

Re: Smoke from old Evinrude 10hp outboard engine

Modern oil allows a much leaner mix ratios than originaly recommended for your outboard.I use 50/1 in my 70 ish 6hp evinrude smokes less
Then when it was new.

Re: Smoke from old Evinrude 10hp outboard engine

If it gives off blue smoke and smells like oil, too much oil in the gas mixture.

IF it smells sweet, the carb. needs to be adjusted to run a little leaner. Lean it out until it runs fastest for the throttle settings, then richen it until it starts to fall off.

Re: Smoke from old Evinrude 10hp outboard engine

Just reading threw the replies. Dump the gas and start from scratch. If it is black smoke live with it, if that does not fix it. I would not put much money into an engine that old. The upper crank bearing will probably fail on an OMC. Shop time is expensive.
