Small Diesel (Albin AD-2) Gearbox Issue

Went out sailing the other day, came into the anchorage area, turned on the engine and when I put it in forward, the prop wouldn't spin! After anchoring under sail, I took the cover off the gearbox and tightened the adjusting ring down as far as it would go, as shown here on page 20, adjustment for running ahead. It will now spin in idle, but not any faster when I throttle up.

Any ideas whats going on here??

How many hours on this engine /trans? Have you done anything to it recently?

No idea, I'm guessing a lot of hours, its a pretty old engine. It was working just fine up until this issue, but I did have to adjust that ring at the start of the season up here.

Does it work now that the oil and trans are cold?
Any chance of something on the prop that would make a worn out clutch pack slip?
How about in reverse? It looks as if that is a different drive system. If so that would mean it might be the disk drive in FWD that is worn out.

Yeah, it works in reverse. And it will go in forward when its warmed up, but not any faster than idle. The engine revs up, but the prop doesnt spin any faster. So you think its a worn clutch pack issue?

Thats what it sounds like but it seems rather sudden.

Re: Small Diesel (Albin AD-2) Gearbox Issue

OK, so I just had the boat hauled, and there is nothing on the prop. I was put back in the water today, motored over to the anchorage and by the time I got there (10 mins) I put it in neutral, then forward again, and the prop refused to spin at all.

What would cause it to work fine when cold, then slip when hot? PS..the engine oil is used as the trans fluid, they are one and the same, so I doubt that is the issue.
