sick old motor

after throwing money at my 30yr old motor and it still will not start I am thinking about a repower. currently have a 30hp perkins prima. Am looking for best options. Nice part is the motor is mounted in the center of the boat so it is easy to work on.

Re: sick old motor

Age maybe not particularly important...

Why won't it start?

Beta Marine. Marinized Kubota engines with great features, probably 10-15% or a bit more cheaper than Yanmar, you can get consumable parts at NAPA. Do some research. Great customer satisfaction.

Call the US importer in NC and talk to Stanley. They will create mounting feet that allow your engine to fit on your existing bed and mounts. They'll locate various bolt on parts in easy-to-service locations based on your engine access. AND you can get a built in oil extractor pump, which is brilliant.

Re: sick old motor

How did it run before? How is it's oil consumption? Does it smoke badly after fully warmed up? Did it make good power? What are the compression numbers?

Re: sick old motor

First, find a REAL mechanic, not just a parts changer. What is the chance that the pump AND the injectors AND the leaking fuel lines all happened at once?

Did it NEED a rebuilt injector pump and injectors? Was it running previously to that?

$460... would be about 4.8 hours tech labor, here in our yard. To tighten some nuts and bleed the engine?

Did the mechanic know why it doesn't start?

Re: sick old motor

A 30 HP repower is going to cost your $10,000 minimum.

Drain some oil and get it analyzed. It will tell you what's in there that's not supposed to be.

Beyond that, if it's turning but not starting it's a fuel issue....You got a new injector pump, but do you know the lifter pump is working?

How about the fuel? Does it look nice and shiny? How old is it? Did you treat it?

Have you tried some ether in the air intake, not a lot just a puff or two while cranking.

When bleeding, do you actually see fuel coming out? Do you know you have good fuel flow, i.e. could a line be clogged enough to no get enough fuel to feed the cylinders enough to fire up.

Like Gary said, what's your compression on each cylinder?

That was going to be my post but you beat me to it.

A real mechanic (one who understands how engines work and how to troubleshoot them) doesn't just replace parts until the engine starts. He will troubleshoot and test.

At some point, we assume the engine was running. A mechanic will take it from there.
