Shaft Brake

Hi I'm new to this (so please bare with me)
I have just bought a Jeanneau 57
It has a shaft brake and a Flexifold folding propeller. How do you initiate the brake and fold the propeller correctly. When sailing I have put it in reverse and the shaft still spins (it only seems to go in reverse when the engine is running) I have found a post which explains how to install and test is to run the engine at 1500rpm in forward gear then turn the engine off this works but has a loud clunk!

In all probability your engine is equipped with a hydraulic actuated transmission. This means that hydraulic pressure is used to engage the clutch packs for forward and reverse travel, and that hydraulic pressure is only available when the engine is running and turning the transmission input shaft and internal hydraulic pump. So if the engine is not running, the transmission and propeller shaft will free wheel regardless of where you place the shift lever.

My boat is also equipped with a hydraulic transmission and a three blade folding prop, but no shaft brake. Inorder to stop the prop from rotating under sail I momentarily place the transmission into reverse just before turning the engine off. This starts the prop rotating in reverse while the boat is moving forward. Then I press the stop button and kill the engine. When the engine stops, the hydraulic pressure ends and the prop stops rotating in reverse. During the moment that the reverse rotation stops, but before it can begin to rotate in the forward direction, the motion of the boat thru the water will cause the prop to fold.

This procedure should not be necessary with the presence of a shaft brake. I would imagine that the application of the brake will be sufficient to stop any prop rotation and allow the prop to fold.

Hi Doug,

you should be able to stop the shaft without any special procedure if you have a shaft brake. The brake is normally off when the engine is running and goes to on (braking) automatically when the engine is turned off.
You should check if your shaft brake has an issue either electrical or mechanical.

I've finally got around to sorting this problem. It looks like there is no
Electrical connections I think its mechanical. The gear box is ZF please see

I can't really see enough from the photos to figure out what's happening.
- yes you have a hydraulic ZF gear box
- when the engine is running there is oil pressure in the small hose coming out the rear of the gearbox and going to something...maybe the actuating cylinder?
- there is also a second hydraulic hose from the actuating cylinder to the brake caliper
- there are two green/ yellow wires going somewhere...are they involved?

If I had to guess I would say that the actuating cylinder has a spring loaded piston that puts pressure on the oil to the caliper, squeezing the disk and that stops the shaft rotation. However when the engine is running the oil pressure from the gearbox overpowers the spring in the actuating cylinder which removes the pressure to the caliper, allowing the shaft to spin.

Maybe the spring load needs adjusting ( increasing), or the hydraulic circuit to the caliper needs to be bled.
